Keeping Your Carpet Safe From COVID-19 - The Basics

Written by David Murphy | Aug 25, 2020 11:30:00 AM

We all know that carpeting can be a source of a wide variety of germs, bacteria, and virus. The COVID-19 virus is no exception. Current evidence suggests that the COVID-19 virus can remain active on a surface from anywhere from a few hours to a few days. That lifespan is partially determined by surface type. Studies have shown that the virus will survive longer on non-porous surfaces than on porous surfaces. The good news is that carpet is porous. The bad news is that COVID-19 can still live within your carpeting for several hours---definitely long enough to be picked up and spread around to other areas within your facility.

Keeping your carpeting free of COVID-19 will help minimize the spread of the virus throughout your facility. This is crucial for the protection of your employees, students, etc. Following a few basics will help keep your carpet healthy.

Use the Right Vacuum

Not all vacuums are created equal, especially when it comes to controlling pathogens. Many standard vacuums will cast germs and virus back into the air where they can be inhaled by your building's occupants. The use of HEPA-filter vacuums will trap those contaminates during the vacuuming process. Make sure to select a vacuum that has been certified as HEPA compliant and be sure to follow all manufacturer instructions related to vacuum maintenance, filter replacement, etc.

Use the Right Technique

To fully capitalize on the benefits of a HEPA vacuum you must use proper vacuuming techniques. Maximum removal of embedded contaminates will require that the operator make several passes over the carpet and to work in a pattern that will ensure that the entire area has been treated. The operator should work at a consistent speed across the entire surface. When in doubt, it is better to vacuum an area two times rather than risk missing it.

Use the Right Disinfectant

Not every disinfectant is effective against COVID-19. To validate the effectiveness of your disinfectant against COVID-19, you can refer to the EPA's List N. The process is quick and simple. Also make sure to follow all the manufacturer’s instructions regarding proper use of the disinfectant. Strict adherence to requirements regarding dwell times are especially important.

Invest in Entry Matting

A good quality entry matting system will help keep virus from being tracked into your facility on the soles of shoes. Facilities that utilize entry matting systems typically have better air quality than those that do not. Untreated shoes can be the source of several contaminates, allergens, and virus---including COVID---that can jeopardize the health of your facility.

The matting should be cleaned and disinfected at least once per day using a disinfectant from the EPA's List N referenced above.

Don't Hesitate to Call a Professional

If you feel overwhelmed or uncertain in your ability to keep your carpeting healthy during this pandemic, then you should consult a professional. A professional cleaning service will have the experience, expertise, and equipment necessary to provide the disinfecting service that you need.
