School Spring Cleaning – Keeping Your School In Shape

Believe it or not, springtime is right around the corner. Over the past few months schools across this county have been exposed to harsh treatment. Weather has taken its toll. Students have taken their toll. Schools that were in prime condition at the onset of the school year are now exhibiting the effects of that relentless wear and tear. A thorough school spring cleaning will help get your school back into good shape.

An effective spring cleaning program will address every high-traffic area within the school. Those would include....

Restrooms

School restrooms take a beating. During the year you do your best to keep your restrooms clean and healthy but, after months of heavy use, they will need a deep cleaning. Your school spring cleaning program should include a focused effort on all restrooms. This deep cleaning should also include a thorough disinfection of the entire restroom environment (toilets, urinals, stalls, countertops, faucets, floors, etc.). This will be your opportunity to bring your restrooms back into prime health and cleanliness.

Cafeterias

Your cafeterias are likely the largest gathering space within your school. It is also one of the principle breeding grounds for germs and bacteria. After several months of preparing, serving, and eating lunches your cafeteria will be in dire need of some spring cleaning. Your deep cleaning and disinfection should include every high-touch point within your cafeteria. This will include the following surfaces:

ü All food prep areas

ü Kitchen appliances

ü All food serving areas

ü Cashier locations

ü Student eating areas

Classrooms

Students, especially young ones, are inherently messy. They are also very efficient carriers of dirt, dust and germs. Your normal cleaning routines may be effective at keeping things under control but sooner or later a more aggressive cleaning will be needed. Springtime is the ideal time for that. Deep cleaning of classrooms would include:

· Desks (cleaning and disinfection)

· Windows (if applicable)

· HVAC vents (cleaning and disinfection)

· Floors (if carpet, this is an ideal time for a good steam-cleaning)

Hallways

During the winter months all manner of debris is tracked into your school via entries and hallways. Over time that debris is tracked into all other areas of your school. Your school spring cleaning routine will be enhanced by a thorough cleaning of all entry and hallway flooring surfaces. Depending on flooring types, your spring cleaning will include one or more of the following: · Cleaning or replacement of entry matting

· Vacuuming and steam-cleaning carpeted surfaces

· Detailed cleaning of corners and edges (sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming (if carpeted)

· Buffing-burnishing (using floor restorer products if necessary)

Your school spring cleaning will greatly benefit your students, teachers, and administrators. Walking into an environment that is clean and fresh will help invigorate everyone for the remainder of the school year.
