The Right DNA-It's the People that Create SuccessThe long-term success of any cleaning operation is fully dependent upon its ability to identify, hire, and retain high-caliber employees. Without those dedicated employees, success can be elusive and fleeting.

Supreme Maintenance Organization's (SMO) 30-year track record is a testament to the importance of Organizational DNA, and how that DNA must be fostered and appreciated.

In their new book, From Rags to....More Rags, authors David Murphy and Gary Collins have provided extensive detail on the critical role their employees have played in the 30-year history of SMO. From a starting point of two employees (David and Gary) to a staff of over 600 employees today, SMO has benefited from employees that have been committed, hard-working, and loyal. SMO has also had a strong hand in developing employees and in doing those things that encourage employee retention.

Hard-Working Humility

Gary and David stress the DNA characteristics of their employees. They are humble, but take great pride in their work. They are family-oriented and bring that same sense of family to the workplace.

The stigma of being labeled a "janitor" is still something that must be overcome within the cleaning service industry. Many cleaning operations suffer from the low morale that that stigma can create. SMO has worked hard over the years to negate that stigma and to foster a true sense of pride within their cleaning operators. As a consequence, SMO has been able to build a large team that, while still humble, are able to be proud of the work they do and of the general good they bring to their clients.

Hiring the Right People

Like any operation, SMO has had its share of employees that turned out to be bad apples. Those folks that were either unable or unwilling to perform as members of the cohesive SMO team. SMO has been able to reduce those occurrences through the robust use of pre-employment assessment tests.

SMO currently uses assessment testing to help validate whether or not a potential employee has the right DNA. They have identified specific characteristics that can predict the future performance and behavior of an individual. Traits such as: aptitude for learning, personal accountability, ability to function within a team environment, etc.
